Health Insurance Comparison - How To Find The Best Health Insurance

April 29th, 2008 · No Comments

Keywords: health insurance, travel health insurance, low cost health insurance, family health insurance

Many people struggle today with the everyday task of paying for their gas in their car. Rising costs of living have also taken away hundreds of dollars a month out of the regular person’s pocketbook and have made it harder to pay for essential things such as health insurance. There are many people that have this kind of coverage through their workplace but many do not. Here are a few ways to do your own health insurance comparison to find the best health insurance policy for you.

Health insurance comparison companies have sprung up all over the country. Whether or not they are advertising with billboards or in newspapers, these companies are trying to garner the interest of people that are passing by or reading the local newspaper in order to get the business for their clients which can also save the consumer money as well.

The Internet is also one of the places that you will find these health insurance comparison companies in great quantity. Whether you see them on search engines using pay per click advertising or you see them on classified websites or even websites that you visit on a regular basis in their advertising such as an e-mail account, they are there to earn money but they can also be very helpful for you if you are trying to save money on your health insurance premiums.

Take for instance the rise of the full-page ad in most advertising forms. You have a multiblock advertisement which shows similar companies that are selling similar things. They all have a way to contact them whether it be by mail or an 800 number. Why these types of advertisement are apropos to health insurance comparison advertising is that these companies will actually do the comparison shopping for you opposed to you having to call and write down all of the information. If the company is Internet-based, they will be able to send you a printout via e-mail that you can look at and decide for yourself which choice would be best for you and your family.

A word of warning regarding these companies is that some of them can be fraudulent and are just trying to take your information and sell it to other people who will bombard you with uncountable calls and e-mails selling other products that may or may not be related to the health insurance industry. Therefore, do your due diligence and make sure that the company that you are asking for help is a legitimate company that is a member of the Better Business Bureau and has no complaints against them before you decide to do business with them and access their health insurance comparison data. With that said let’s go on to a few other things.

The first thing you want to look at is the size of the company itself. This can be done by simply going to a search engine or looking in a magazine and seeing which companies have the largest advertising budget. These companies will more than likely have the lowest premiums because they have the largest subscriber base to their particular insurance.

The next thing that you would do is to go to each of the health insurance companies websites in order to determine which benefit packages that they have. Most of them will have a multiple amount of packages to suit the needs of the many consumers that are looking for coverage.

Then take each one of their policies including all of their different levels of coverage and print them out so that you can see them on your kitchen table. Draw a line between the ones that look the most similar ends then circled the price points regarding the monthly fees that you will have to pay.

Now you need to consider your own needs. Consider how many times you think that you would go to the doctor and the possibility of you going in for a major medical operation. Using these factors, and the factors of your family, you can determine which one would be right for you.

The last thing that you do is look at the premiums that you will be paying and see what you will have to do in order to compensate. For instance, if you would like to go for one of the better packages, more than likely in your health insurance comparison, you will find that your premiums will be very high which means your monthly money that you have to support your family will be far less.

The final verdict on which one you pick is a juggle between what you believe your family should have and what you believe you can afford. But only by placing out on your kitchen table a printout of all of the health insurance policy rates and what they cover can you make a factual determination using this health insurance comparison technique.

Do You Want The Extra Protection Package Sir?

April 27th, 2008 · No Comments

Keywords: Car, Hire, Insurance,

When we hire a car, after going through the reams of paperwork, and in some outlets, giving our bio-metric data, we are asked the age old question. For a nominal fee would you like our insurance protection plan?

Many think this is a necessity but in reality it is optional. The question that enters my mind however is, ‘is it really worth it?’ What will I gain from paying this nominal fee? If I do happen to have an accident how far will it go to reimbursing me?

To answer these questions a number of factors must be taken into consideration and case studies looked at; it’s a classic case of risk versus reward. For some who never use the car hire firm’s optional insurance cover, money has been saved wholesale, although regular users know things can go wrong and the cover comes in handy sometimes.

Overall customers are not sure of their own level of cover; some personal insurance policies can be extended to car hire and many clients are unsure if their own cover will do this, bear in mind it is something worth checking out before hiring a car.

Figures from an insurance company survey show that 34 percent of people will buy a car hire company’s additional cover just for the sense of security. This however is a mistake and in many cases an undue expense.

Added to customers own personal insurance policies, the credit card often used for the leasing of a car carries its own secondary insurance. In many cases, when accidents in hire cars have occurred, customers have neglected this element of there credit card service and failed to make a claim, unfortunately, if a claim is not made within 45 days of the incident it is impossible to recoup the losses encountered.

Making claims on both personal insurance policies and credit card secondary insurance however can be difficult. Not all policies will give cover if the car hire is for business trips and also many will not give cover for long term rentals. Added to this it is, cover is not always available in foreign countries, making the optional extra cover a valid decision.

Car hire companies offer many levels of cover making the choice for customers increasingly difficult. Options include loss or damage waivers, personal effects protection and in most cases numerous accident damage policies.

Customers have had nightmares when no additional cover has been purchased, as car hire companies charge an extortionate fee for damage, even if it is just scratch. This makes the argument for extra cover stronger but does not make it a necessity.

..Many regular clients of car hire companies feel that the optional insurance is completely overpriced, and as long as the prices remain high they will not purchase the cover. Some purely buy the collision coverage just for peace of mind while others who have had awful past experiences always purchase extra cover.

Car hire companies predictably defend their cover plans, some state that even if your personal insurance will cover your rental would you really want to jeopardise your no claims bonus? They also defend the elevated prices with the explanation that those insist on refusing optional insurance are keeping fees high

It is clearly visible that customers are divided over the issue, ultimately it boils down to whether you are a risk taker or not. Whether you are willing to gamble your wallet against the nominal fee they ask for at the desk or simply hand over the amount for peace of mind. What can definitely be asserted is that as long as there are risk takers among us, this trend will continue.

Integrated Circuits And How They Affect You

April 27th, 2008 · No Comments

Keywords: IC, Integrated Circuit

Instead of clunky circuits, etching complete circuits on “chips” has moved the work of IT far ahead. Don’t you think you would like to know more about an IC? How does it apply to you? How has their development changed your life? To answer these questions, we must first work to understand them as a whole.

Whether integrated or not, circuits are circuits. Their makeup should not be too far from your grasp, as they are constructed from basic electronic parts. The technology that makes your computer able to run everything from Word to Half-Life is just run by connected transistors, diodes, capacitors, and resistors. The transistors act as amplifiers for all of our household electronics, while the resistors focus on tuning back the effect.

Capacitors allow electricity to be stored and released in varying amounts for special effects, and the diode works to cut off electricity. Through these simply changes to electric current, we are able to send information throughout the device to make everything just work.

With these basics in mind, let us explore further. The 1950s saw a very important change in the field of electronic parts. Transistors were invented to replace the bulky and ineffective vacuum tubes that were once necessary for circuits. This let smaller electronics be practical and possible, since you finally didn’t need your own power plant to run advancing technologies.

It was circuitry that held back further compression. Computers require the electric signals to flow quickly between the different parts. Old methods of production meant that the chips were just too large to actually be fast enough for practical computing. A new method for building a faster and smaller chip had to be found.

But the solution was found in the form of an Integrated Circuit. He was just a new researcher left alone in the Texas Instruments laboratory while several of his colleagues were on vacation. While alone, he came up with a radical new way to actually craft chips. The different parts could just be made out of one block of a semi-conductive material.

Conducting connecters put these parts together. Gone were the days of unwieldy and ineffective wires for transmitting information from point A to point B. This technique allowed for smaller integrated circuits to be made later on, which ultimately led to the development of the microprocessor.

This followed decades of innovation and that is what brought us to where we are. One integrated circuit led to another until it ended with the mind shatteringly fast chips of today. Hundreds of millions of basic electronic parts are now able to fit on one chip that is no larger than an average fingernail.

Mortgage Predatory Lending And How To Avoid It

April 27th, 2008 · No Comments

Keywords: Mortgages, mortgage, uk, home loan, loans, loan, uk, compare, adverse, credit, debt consolidation

There has been a lot of talk lately about predatory lending in the mortgage industry, but not much talk about what it is. Predatory lending covers a lot of area and some of the practices that are used in it are somewhat difficult to understand for the average consumer. Here are a few aspects of predatory mortgage lending that might be of interest.

The first thing consumers should understand is that predatory lending does not begin and end with the lenders themselves. It is true that there are several lenders who are guilty of bad loan practices, but there are others just as guilty. These include appraisers, mortgage brokers, home builders, and home improvement contractors to name a few.

Some of the things that you want to watch out for when you are considering a home purchase include:

Always think twice before working with someone who will sell properties for much more than they are worth by using false appraisals that inflate the value of the home.

Never work with anyone who wants you to lie about your income, expenses, or job history. They may also want you to lie about the amount of cash that you have on hand.

Stay away from lenders who encourage you to borrow more money than you know you can repay. This is one of the fastest ways to foreclosure known.

Some predatory lenders will charge high interest rates to home buyers based solely on their race or national origin. The black community is especially hard hit with this one.

There are also some lenders and other professionals who will charge high fees that are not normally a part of the home buying process. If someone asks you to pay a fee for a product or a service make sure you understand what it is you are paying for.

Be very careful when working with anyone who tries to pressure you into taking a home loan that contains high-risk factors. These include things such as balloon loans, interest only payments, and steep pre-payment penalties.

The elderly seem especially vulnerable to those predators who use high-pressure sales tactics to sell home improvement projects or work and then finance them at very high interest rates.

Lending predators are good at their work. If they were not, there would not be such a problem with them. Some of the cons they use to pull people in include such things as telling a home buyer that they, and only they, are the only ones who will finance the home. They may also try to convince you that the home you are looking at is worth much more than surrounding homes even though there is no physical proof that it is. Many of these folks want home buyers to sign contracts or other documents that have blank spaces. Home buyers should never sign these types of documents.

Another crafty tactic is to hand over a higher than expected bill at closing. They understand that after all you have been through to get to this final stage you are more likely to pay the added charges. Do not pay them unless it is proven that they are legitimate charges.

The best advice is to be careful and to be wary. Take your time and do not allow lenders or others to pressure you or to push you into a contract that you do not fully understand.

Top 7 Mistakes That Small Business Owners Make And How To Overcome Them!

April 27th, 2008 · No Comments

Keywords: Business education, small business education, business articles, business management

Yes, small businesses can succeed! The success of your business depends not on its size but in the quality of its execution and implementation. Here are some common mistakes business owners make and how you can avoid them.

a. Focusing on tertiary work: Many small business owners are so overwhelmed with non-critical work that they have very little time left for strategic, more important business decisions. It is far more important not to get bogged down by the little, trivial details of everyday business. Instead, you need to stay focused on your core competencies and drive the business forward. If you are understaffed consider outsourcing all non-core work.

b. Not making an honest assessment: Most small business owners don’t know what’s happening in their own business. They mostly presume they know it, but fact is they are never really on top of things. It is essential to honestly evaluate the current state of your business. Take an employee-wide survey or ask your subordinates and colleagues for honest feedback. This will provide a much needed honest assessment of the current situation in the company.

c. Not setting timelines: Most meetings go by without end objectives being met. The reason for laying down a plan and conducting meetings is to ensure each responsibility is implemented within the timeframe. Therefore set realistic goals and set timelines to each plan. Delegate work according to skill sets. This will also ensure all employees are happy in their responsibilities and job skills.

d. Not performing follow-ups: A crucial determinant of success is how much you follow-up and ensure implementation. It is necessary to follow-up and to ensure all tasks assigned are completed within time. Else the plan just remains open ended with no near end to completion. So ensure to keep reminding and asking your subordinates on the plan at hand. If you can’t, delegate the responsibility to someone else.

e. Investing more on technology vs. people: One big mistake small business owners make is to invest heavily on new technology as opposed to their own employees. It is a company’s employees who drive the business forward and get new customers and contacts. Therefore it makes perfect business sense to invest more in people.

f. Not remunerating yourself well: Most small business owners multitask a lot. It could be because of a shortage of capital, lack of resources etc. However, whatever the reason, when it’s pay time, ensure you remunerate yourself according to whatever effort you have put in. Most business owners undervalue themselves and end up getting paid less. Don’t make this mistake. Pay yourself well, that way you will stay motivated too.

g. Work life balance in jeopardy: Most CEOs of successful Fortune 500 companies have a happy, family support system behind them. If you want your business to flourish, make sure not to compromise on your personal life. Take care to balance out work and family time. By seeing to a holistic balance, you can enhance your business growth in a short time.

Now that you know the mistakes, take active steps to avoid making these mistakes. These are common pitfalls that business owners fall into. So take note and stay away from these!

How Hiring A Virtual Assistant Can Help You Earn More Money

April 27th, 2008 · No Comments

Keywords: virtual assistant, virtual pa

It may seem backwards, but it’s a simple fact that there are times you need to spend money to make money. Hiring a virtual assistant is one of these times. It’s going to cost you up front, but the rewards will be great, no doubt.

First of all, hiring a virtual assistant will allow you to outsource the tasks you do not enjoy doing or have a hard time accomplishing. When faced with an unpleasant task, many people procrastinate. If this happens to you, this can leave your business at a stand still.

When you hire a virtual assistant to take on the tasks that you do not enjoy, you will feel like a heavy weight has been lifted. You will rest assured that the task is getting done and will be able to stop thinking about the task that you do not enjoy and focus on other parts of your business.

For example, let’s say that you decided to outsource your email and accounting to a virtual assistant. If these are tasks you used to dread, you may have actually wasted a lot of time procrastinating before you started them, and when you worked on them, you may have been very easily distracted. This could lead to a one-hour task taking three hours to complete.

By outsourcing them, you will now have an extra three hours a day, or fifteen hours per week to work on tasks you enjoy. However, that doesn’t mean you should work on them. If it is cheaper for you to outsource these tasks, you should consider doing so. This will free up more of your time, allowing you to work on marketing your business and creating new projects.

How do you know if outsourcing these tasks would be cheaper than doing it yourself? Take a look at how much you earn and divide that into an hourly wage.
For example, let’s say you earn $5000 per month from your business and you work 30 hours per week. You are earning almost $40 per hour. You can find a virtual assistant to take on some of the tasks you enjoy for around half that. You will still be making a profit, and you will have more time to work on the activities that draw people to your business, thus increasing your profits even more.

You will be amazed when you see just how much more work you can get done and how much more time you will when you hire a virtual assistant. It may be one of the best business decisions you ever make.

How To Stay Focused On Your Home Business Goals

April 27th, 2008 · No Comments

Keywords: make money online, money making site, automated internet profit system, affiliate programs

When you are the owner of a home business, you will find hundreds of distractions that vie for your time, energy and focus.

Common distractions include: children, family, friends, neighbors, pets, phone calls, mail, household chores, video games, television, neighborhood children, visitors, and so many more.

As an owner of a home based business, you must always remember your purpose in bringing your profession home. What was your reason for wanting to own a home business? Was your goal to work from home so that you can share in the lives of your children? Was your goal to be out from under the rule of a tyrannical boss? Was your goal to have the freedom to work when it is convenient for you? Was your goal to make tons of money working for yourself?

Here’s a few good tips that will help you stay focused on your home business:

TIP #1:
Whatever your reason for going out on your own, you must keep your reason in the forefront of your mind. If you forget your reason for starting your own home business, you will not be working for yourself for long. It is far too easy to let circumstance drive your activities — and when circumstance is in the driver’s seat, you are more likely to crash and burn.

TIP #2:
Remember — your own business is a lot like a real job. Some people go to work to play, some go to socialize, and others — most often those who are paid in a commission or tip environment — go to work to work and to make money. When you work for yourself, your salary is directly proportional to your productivity. Therefore, wouldn’t it make sense to stay focused on getting as much done in as short of a period as possible?

Go to work to work and to make money. Leave playtime and recreation for when your workday has ended.

TIP #3:
When you are dealing with family in the course of your workday, it is important to schedule your activities as much as possible. With small children, you must take time when you must, but you should also work hard to make sure you dedicate a specific number of hours to your workday.

With older children, it is much easier to tell them that you will be working between the hours of x and y. Your children and your friends must understand that certain hours of your day are devoted to the activities of your business.

TIP #4:
Don’t permit your friends and extended family to run over you. Many people get the blind idea that if one works from home then they are not actually working.

Well-meaning people may try to fill your doorway to bring advice about getting a real job. Others may simply believe that if you are at home, then you are fair game for chitchat and socialization.

You must stand firm. You must make certain your friends and family understands that when you are working, then you ARE working! If they wish to socialize with you, then they need to do it during the hours that are not dedicated to your home business.

You are the only one who can stand up for you. Your friends and family will seldom be able to appreciate your dedication to your home business, unless you make the effort to make sure that they have the same respect for your business that you do.

TIP #5:
You should allot a certain portion of your day to email and to regular mail. For example, allot one hour in the morning and one hour in the afternoon to handling your written communications.

Unless you dedicate certain times to the handling of these communications, you will soon find yourself on the downward slope of decreased productivity.

TIP #6:
When you find yourself spending too much time doing non-productive activities, then you should seriously consider finding a third-party service provider who will assist you in those non-profitable business activities.

As an example, you might be in the mail-order business. You might believe that your time is best spent writing ad copy and setting up your advertising, but you find yourself spending far too much time taking care of your books to take care of your advertising in the manner that you should. In this event, it might make more sense to hire a bookkeeper to handle your financial records for you.

CONCLUSION:
In the end, the success of your home business is entirely and completely reliant upon you and the decisions that you make.

You had your reasons for deciding to start your own home based business. You must always keep your reasons in the forefront of your mind. You must always be able to rely upon your own self and your dedication to the success of your business.

Your friends and family might be annoyed that they cannot come visit upon their own whim, but when success comes to you and your business, they will better appreciate you for putting your foot down when necessary.

Success is within your reach, if only you can stay focused on your goals. You must decide to reach for your goals, and then, you must have the discipline necessary to reach them.

Is A Home Business Right For You?

April 26th, 2008 · No Comments

Keywords: make money online, money making site, automated internet profit system, affiliate programs

Every morning as people wake up and make the commute to work, many dream of the day when they will finally work for themselves. Every time the boss lets someone know that they must give up their weekend plans for the good of the company, people contemplate the benefits of being the owner of their own business.

Are you one of these people?

If you are, it is important to ask yourself some very important questions before you make the uncertain leap into self-employment.

Many dream of the benefits of home business ownership, but few take into account the sacrifices that must be made to bring the dream to fruition. Please don’t make this mistake yourself.

You must approach home business ownership with your eyes wide open. Ask yourself the important questions, and more importantly, answer your own questions openly and honestly.

AN IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION

Are you the type of person who relishes every chance to gather around the water cooler for social interaction?

If so, then home business ownership may not be the right decision for you.

Instead, if you feel that you can be quite content sitting alone at your desk; speaking only to clients and really minding your own home business, then you might have what it takes to succeed as a home business entrepreneur.

If you feel at ease with your own company and don’t need a dozen coworkers milling around your desk, then you, too, could savor the freedoms that will allow you and your family, to live the lifestyle you know you want and deserve.

THE KEY TO HOME BUSINESS SUCCESS

Self-motivation is the key to success when you start a home-based business. You need to possess the ability to push yourself ahead. Your drive and determination will be reinforced with every new sale.

The level of success that you will achieve greatly depends on the time and effort you are willing to plow into your new home business. Your organization, planning and marketing skills, will all be put into practice when you embark on your liberating journey from employee, to being your own boss. In fact, you will be the wearer of many hats and gain a wealth of business experience along the way, when you finally make that commitment to work at home.

YOUR SUCCESS RESTS ENTIRELY UPON YOUR OWN SHOULDERS

You will now be the boss. Are you truly able to work independently? Do you have the drive; the tenacity, to persevere with your home based business? Will you be able to invest the necessary time to nurture it, to watch it grow and see it through, from germination to full, glorious bloom? When you’re the boss, you are responsible for the success of your home business, from A to Z, from disappointments to victory.

When you work at home, it will empower you to achieve many things you were unable to do when you were stuck working for that tyrant boss. Remember him? He’s the guy that wouldn’t let you take time off when your baby was sick…the same guy that called you in to work on Thanksgiving Day.

A home business means that you can take good care of your family and make money from home, simultaneously. You will have the best of both worlds! Just think–no more dirty laundry piling up–you can do it while you work. No more scurrying around at the last minute searching for a babysitter either. And no more worrying about getting fired; you’ll be the boss!

IN CONCLUSION…

Stay positive and focused on your home based business, even if, when sales aren’t up to par, you get occasional negative remarks or derogatory comments from people with stuffy, dead-end jobs. Ignore their cutting words and bear in mind that success is the best revenge! Keep your admirable, positive attitude at the forefront and show them what you’re made of!

Knowing that we want to have a business of our own is not enough. Many of us have struggled with the important question of what type of enterprise we would like to start.

Franchises offer a simple pre-packaged money making idea, but the cost of a franchise often makes it a prohibitive option to most folks who contemplate going out on their own.

For those who do not have a million dollars to buy a McDonalds franchise, we must look to other ideas for our own business.

There are literally hundreds of lucrative home business ideas for you to choose from, which will suit every type of personality and all levels of financing. From selling information on the Internet as a infopreneur, to growing delicious gourmet mushrooms for sale to restaurants and catering companies; there is a pile of money to be made by filling a need, for these and a host of other necessary services.

Of course, actually liking what you do, will have a lot to do with the success of your new venture, so be sure to pick a home business that you’ll enjoy running and that will keep you motivated.

For example, if you’re a math whiz, an accounting or income tax service might be the ideal home business for you to start. Perhaps writing is your forte and you’d like to start your own home based copywriting service or advertising agency. Each of these businesses can be run successfully–and profitably from the comfort of your own home.

Academia might not be your cup of tea, but maybe you are good with your hands — having a creative genius where crafts are concerned. Craft items are red-hot sellers at swap meets, country fairs and world wide over the Internet, and they can provide you with solid profits. If crafts don’t interest you, then why not start a laundry service with pick-up and delivery, or a shopping service for shut-in’s–even a companion service or granny sitter or a doctor shuttle service; any of which, could be much in demand, in and around your neighborhood or community.

When brainstorming new ideas for your future home business, keep in mind the soul of any successful endeavor is providing a product or service that others will actually purchase in quantities. Satisfy the needs of your target market, and your target market will keep you and your home based business healthy, happy and profitable.

Below are some suggestions for home business ideas that might help you decide on a suitable venture in which to invest.

Multi-level-marketing (mlm), floral/plant service for offices and hospitals, pooper-scooper service, dog walking service, answering service, vending machine service, gift basket service, homemade soap maker, mobile windshield repair service, mobile tire repair service, income tax specialist, researcher, freelance writer, business card and letterhead designer, courier, shut-in/shuttle service, landscaping service, tree trimming service, wood crafter, carpenter, crafts and crafting supplies, pool cleaning service, plants/nursery starts, growing herbs, growing mushrooms, garage sale and swap meet vendor, proofreader, private investigator, typing service, interior decorator/designer, website design, wedding consultant, hot lunch/snack vendor at local courthouses, pet sitting service, pet grooming service, Internet entrepreneur, paralegal, gourmet catering service, new media production, mobile cosmetic technician, mobile nail technician, mobile hair stylist, aerobics instructor, p
ersonal fitness trainer, advertising consultant, companion service, small printing service.

Ideas, ideas; hopefully the above ideas will give you some fresh ideas of your own to mull over. A spring board if you will, on which to dive into your own chosen home business.

When you work from home, any business you start has the potential to explode into a perpetual gold mine! It just depends on how much your home business is in demand around your community or on the Internet. Your home business might start slow and steady, regularly picking up clients as you become more established. On the other hand, your chosen home business may take off like wildfire, quickly becoming too hot for you to handle by yourself (well done!). This is the time to enlist the help of willing family members to help you out in your time of need, which will make your business into a friendly, family concern. This will also help family members better understand your business and get a grasp on the mechanics of profit.

Good luck in all your decisions and have fun with your home business, which ever one you choose, and don’t forget to enjoy your newfound freedom!

An Alternative Route To Education

Keywords: Whitman Nobel Academy deals, Alpha Omega Publications - AOP promotion code, ClickN READ Phonics coupons

As we are currently in the age of technology, and so many new things are cropping up in our midst when it comes to learning, it would come as no surprise that there are also other ways of dealing with a traditional approach to education. Some people want to apply a more hands-on take on educating their children with the thought of changing their strategies from that of the usual classroom settings.

Most of these concerned parents are aware that there is no single definite route to instilling ideas and basic knowledge to their kids but that alternative methods are available for them. Thus more people are interested in the process of homeschooling. This is a method of teaching that allows children to stay at home while being regularly taught with subjects that are introduced in standard schools as well, with the difference of not having to interact with other children their age on a daily basis.

Two of the most influential experts in Early Childhood Education, Ray and Dorothy Moore, conducted studies and research in the 1960s and 1970s regarding the developmental aspects of children. Education placed a high regard in these studies that they were looking for alternative ways on how to improve children’s reception to learning. They concluded in one of their studies that children do not benefit much from being sent to a structured school environment at an early age, before the age of 8-12. They explained how this setup can incur physical, emotional and social strains since children are not yet equipped to constantly adjust at this point in their lives.

Better Off At Home

The Moores did not want to introduce homeschooling as something that is an academic equivalent to standard schooling but rather for it to be seen as a natural approach to knowledge-producing experiences in the daily home life. They wanted to encourage parents to invest their time in a regular interaction with their children, and be involved with them in their process of knowing basic subjects. The time they spent at home with their young ones in their formative years would greatly enhance their learning curves and would instill in them an innate confidence of support and emotional bond.

As far as teaching at home is concerned, they think that this would yield better results when it comes to emotionally and socially adjusted children. They wanted to point out that not all children who were sent off to the best schools with supposedly excellent teachers turn out to be the most highly adjusted and knowledgeable students. There are also other factors such as emotional rapport and familial support that can entirely make or break each child’s motivation to learn.

Compared to schools, the home is one of the most secure environments for the child to be in on a daily basis. Thus it is a venue where the children can associate good and sound memories from. And add the learning dynamics to the equation, one could never find a much better scenario for producing a mentally and emotionally stable student.

What Leaders Need To Know About Theory Based Communication

April 26th, 2008 · No Comments

Keywords: Communication, leadership, theory, sales, marketing, direct, sales

Leadership, sales, marketing, training, mentoring -they all demand communication skills. Understand a few communication theories and you can greatly improve these skills.

While I would like to give you simple pat answers, life is not always simple. Some of the most abundant oil wells require deep drilling. I say that so that you will not check out on reading something that can make a dynamic difference in your business. It will require some deep mental drilling. Hopefully we will be drilling and not boring. (Pun intended.)

I am going to talk about communication theories. I have discovered how important it is to have a basic understanding of communication theories in my work as a communication and e-learning professional and consultant.

If you want to communicate more effectively, base your communication on some of these theories. Understanding just a few theories is one of the most effective ways to improve your communication and marketing skills.

Definition of theory

What definition of theory will I use? Theory: It is a pattern of study that has been developed over time and contains a testable body of information or principles that guide activities. It is a systematic model that explains interactions in a way that helps you predict the future.

When you communicate as leader in business, education, church or marketing, you want to use proven patterns that have a history of success, don’t you? It makes sense to have principles that have been tested and proven to be good guides?

What theory is not

The theories I refer to are not abstract speculation that some John Doe dreamed up in the middle of the night because he had too much pizza before bed. Sometimes the term theory is used in this way.

Some people call speculation theory. Used that way theory is the opposite of fact. That is not the theory you need, although you probably know leaders that operate on those kinds of theories.

Sometime methods and accepted traditional models are defined as theory, such as music theory. It is closer to the definition — but not quite close enough.

The power of theory

The power of theory (the first definition) is when it can be adapted to guide your activities. You use the theory to plan; then you implement the plan; you check the results, and make adjustments to your understanding of the theory and do it again. That is the kind of theory that turbo-charges your thinking.

So the short definition for the kind of theory I reference here is: a systematic model that explains interactions in such a way that it helps you predict the future.

Theories are everywhere. Here are three ways a theory can serve you if you are a leader.

1. It allows you to learn from genius

The kind of theories I defined have been developed out of careful research and study, sometimes a lifetime of it. Because they have been developed by scholars and preserved in their writings, you can read and learn from past genius.

For example there have been heavily researched theories regarding face-saving. Face saving is the action designed not to cause the other person embarrassment. Theories related to face-saving indicate that persons who come from more collectivistic cultures engage in high face saving.

Conversely, people from more individualistic cultures tend to speak more directly and with less concern about helping the other party save face. This launches us into the next way theories help communicators and leaders.

2. Theory provides a basis for analysis you might otherwise miss

In the example of face-saving theory, I mentioned collectivistic cultures. Collective cultures are cultures with high interdependence. Examples of collectivistic cultures might include some Asian and Hispanic cultures.

Let speculate and say you are an individualist and you invite a Latin American you just met to a social event. This person says they will come. If you understand face-saving you will quickly analyze the situation and understand that the invitee may intend to come.

However, you also realize the invitee may be helping you save face, not wanting to embarrass you by refusing your hospitality. This leads to the third way a theory may serve you.

3. Theory provides a big-picture vantage point

Using the example above you know about face-saving, so you overtly provide a way in the conversation for the person to gracefully decline. Or perhaps it means you are a little slower to brand the persons as “not keeping their word” when in their culture “yes” means “I would like to” rather than a definite, “I am coming”.

Understanding the theory could help you understand the situation from a higher cultural view point rather than a personal view point. This keeps you from wasting emotional energy because you take it personally and are angry, hurt, or disappointed.

There are other ways that theories can help us understand our interactions. They can give us consistency in the way we mentally process interactions; they provide a common language and understanding of what may be occurring; and, they provide a point from which to develop new theories as the old are applied to new situations.

Know that the example above is only one example. Watch for upcoming articles on theories that you as a leader will want to know and apply. In the meantime, do a web search combining theory with words like, communication or leadership.

Practice looking at situations through the lens of some good theories and it will make you a better leader in religious, direct marketing, educational, training, and sales organizations. Theories give insight. Use them.

Holidays Keep Your Heart Ticking And Good For Your Looks Too!

April 26th, 2008 · No Comments

Most people would have experienced that feeling that their day is just not going to get any better, even if they did wake up on the right side of the bed. I am one of those people when having worked diligently all week over different articles, I then find myself by the end of the week staring at a blank page not knowing what on earth to write next!

This is the point whereby I switch my mind off and fantasize about a long break away at a luxury Caribbean hotel.

Whilst I was on the train to work, having been unsuccessful in obtaining a seat and being made to stand by the window that revealed a big mush of dull misty and grey scenery; I receive a text message from my best friend rambling on about her holiday in the Bahamas to which she will be leaving for tomorrow morning!

I could not hide my envy and very quickly, my day turned from bearable to just plain depressing! The fantasy of a luxury Caribbean hotel is something I will have to make into a reality!

I have always wanted to take a nice trip to a hot climate in the middle of winter. It is a well-known scientific fact that taking vacations can have great benefits to your health, particularly for middle-aged men who are at risk of suffering from heart diseases. The overall number of men between the ages of 35 - 57 years had a much higher death rate than those who do take regular vacation breaks.

Although I am not a middle-aged man, I can understand why my brain wanders off to the world of a luxury Caribbean hotel; maybe it was my body’s way of saying ‘You need a holiday!’

People who work in an environment causing high amounts of stress are often the ones to neglect their health and rarely monitor their eating and sleep patterns. They are also less likely to take holidays abroad, often without realising that they are causing damage to their health. Stress is thought to influence heart disease in different ways with many people resorting to more risky methods to relax, such as smoking or drinking an increased amount of alcohol.

Vacations can counteract these risky effects and can lower blood pressure through relaxation and plenty of resting. Studies have shown that men who take regular vacations reduce their risk of heart disease by as much as 30 percent, and reduce their overall risk of death to about 20 percent.

It will come as no surprise then when research have also shown that those that do not take regular vacations are never rewarded anything extra for their hard work and dedication to their jobs.
Judging by the statistics one would think that taking regular holidays is a better option than working yourself to death!

Yet those who do not even participate in leisurely activities are unaware of the number of years they are taking off from their life. It has even shown that those overworking themselves age quicker and appear older than those do make time for a holiday.

Wrinkles appear far more quickly on people who are more stressed. Often people who work too hard can gain weight and even risk skin and hair problems as they are less likely to take care of themselves.

Those that do take time out for some R&R tend to look better feel better and live longer. So maybe perhaps if, like me, you have a longing feeling of escaping to a luxury Caribbean hotel or visit the Mediterranean, maybe for health reasons you should just make the jump temporarily and go!

The Catalan Language - A Languages Of The World Primer

April 26th, 2008 · No Comments

Keywords: catalan, language, education, learning, teaching, spain

Catalan is a Romance languages that grew out of “Vulgar Latin”. It initially developed along the northern and southern sides of the eastern Pyrenees and by the 9th century was an identifiable language in its own right.

As Catalan political and military power increased during the “reconquest” of Spain from the Arab inhabitants, the language was pushed south through Catalonia and into Valencia and across the seas to the Balearic Islands.

When Catalan political and military power subsequently ebbed, however, the language suffered. In 1700, following the Treaty of the Pyrenees, Louis XIV of France banned Catalan from being used in official documents in what Catalans call “Northern Catalonia” (corresponding approximately to the current French department of Pyrenees-Orientales).

At around the same time, the kingdom of Spain prohibited the use of Catalan for official purposes including in education. It was not until the cultural revival in the late 19th century that the language began to recover, only to be battered once again by the Spanish Civil War. Franco’s linguistic policy of Castilian first (known as Spanish outside Spain) meant that there was little place for Catalan, which was widely repressed. After Franco’s death in 1975 and the coming of democracy the language once again flourished, aided somewhat by active promotion by the local Catalan Regional government (Generalitat).

Related languages
Catalan is very closely related to its linguistic neighbours (Occitan, Castilian, Aragonese, French). Of these Occitan and Catalan are probably the most mutually intelligible although many Castilian speakers have little difficulty understanding Catalan with the reverse almost invariably true. As with most romance languages there is a fair degree of mutual intelligibility with Italian, French and Portuguese but as accents and pronunciation vary dramatically from the Balearic islands to Andorra there is no hard and fast rule.

Status today
Catalan is an official language of Andorra and has joint official status in Catalonia where it is widely used in political and cultural life. It is also spoken in parts of south-eastern France, Aragon, Murcia and in the city of L’Alguer in Sardinia. Valencian, which is spoken in Valencia, and the various linguistic variants spoken on the Balearic Islands are, to all intents and purposes, the same language with accent and pronunciation being the most notable divergences. A rough equivalence would be the differences between US and British English. For local political reasons, however, there is strong resistance to being classed under the Catalan banner and indeed during the ratification process for the 2004 EU constitution, the Spanish government supplied separate Catalan, Balearic and Valencian translations even though they were actually identical.

Accurate estimates of the number of true native speakers are difficult to come by but official sources claim close to 10 million people are able to speak the various variants. This breaks down into 6 million in Catalonia, 2.5 million in Valencia and 0.75 million on the Balearic Islands. An additional 2 million people claim to be able to understand it. The position of Catalan has been strengthened in recent decades by the popularity of local Catalan-speaking television stations and by the fact that it is compulsory in schools across Catalonia and Valencia.

Improve Your Swing Or Lower Your Scores?

April 26th, 2008 · No Comments

Keywords: golf, golf teacher, Improve your swing, lower your scores, golf swing, golfer.

As a golf teacher, I have been helping people with their golf for over 17 years.

Usually, the first thing a golfer wants fixed is their golf swing so they can get rid of their slice or get more distance. And they give me 30 minutes to do it.

I learned very early to ask the question - “Do you want me to put a band aid on your swing or lower your scores and reduce your handicap?”

A great drive is a good experience but a consistent overall game that wins the trophy satisfies a lot longer.

I try to get someone to play 9 holes with me so I can assess their overall game and also give them a standard they can aspire to. Shooting around 80 should not really be too difficult for the average player.

I played with a mate the other day who was worried about his slice and ball striking in general. He proceeded to hit the best drive of his life on the first hole but it just caught the fairway bunker.

He got it out of there and hit a pitch onto the green to about 30 feet, but then hit it 6 feet past and missed it for 6.

He also three putted the next and missed a 4 foot putt for birdie on the next hole. He was playing well, but had thrown three shots away in the first three holes. And when he duffed one into the water on the next hole, he ran up a 9. Another double bogey on the next short par 3 with a poor chip that overshot the green, another in the water on the next and he was ready to listen to an overall approach to improving his game.

Now you might be a better golfer than my friend, or worse, but the question remains - Do you want to lower your scores? If you do, it will take an overall approach, improving each area of your game so if one part of your game is falling down, you can rely on another part to limit or repair the damage.

To improve your golf requires a plan, something like Project Golf (not Project Golf Swing, which is just part of the overall plan).Improvement has its rewards.

Following an improvement plan will make you a much better player. The better you play, the more fun you have. The better player you are will help you appreciate the challenge of the top courses.

You will have the knowledge that you have the tools to overcome the challenges of golf that very few people experience.

You will be able to beat the other people who are too lazy or have egos that are too big to think they can improve without some intelligent thinking and organized practice.

They will remain confused about golf, wondering why other people play better than them while they jump from new club to new club, tip to tip and theory to theory while their performances stay inconsistent.

You can achieve your goals in golf if you assess where you are at in each area of the game, get the knowledge of the fundamentals, plan which areas to work on, practice these areas, test how they go when practicing and playing, and reassess so you can go through the cycle again. Have fun, be persistent and have patience.

Mini Digital Camcorder - New Mobile Revolution That Fits Nicely Into Your Pocket

April 26th, 2008 · No Comments

Keywords: Mini Digital camcorder, mini DV camcorder, mini dv digital camcorder

If you are having challenges trying to carry around your camcorder, and because of that, you end up losing out on your more treasured moments everywhere you traveled; you no longer need to concern yourself with this. As of late, size reductions in different types of camcorders, or better known as mini digital camcorder, has begun to enter into and is gradually increasing in market saturation.

In the not too distant past, people were still utilizing camcorders that were up to 2 pounds, however nowadays, these newer types of camcorders weigh only as much as your mobile phone making it more transportable.

Miniaturized Mobile Video

When looking at it in a different perspective, this new type of trend is really not so new after all. In reality it began with mobile phones. At one time mobile phones were as large as bricks, then as time progressed they became about half that size, and a little later they have turned into a device as small as a matchbox.

The camcorder manufacturers were taking notice of this trend and it motivated them to switch from large and bulky camcorders to the smaller ones that fit into a small pouch, and eventually into even smaller types that will fit into a small pencil case.

The most beneficial part of it all is that regardless of how small the mini digital camcorder has become, the quality of the image has rarely if it all decreased, because of the introduction of superior compression technology which saves and stores the whole video into a smaller file size, but retains its quality of output.

Technological Evolution

This mini Digital camcorder can be equated to the miniature version of the hard drive camcorders in which you are able to record the raw video stored within the internal hard drive, which you can then transfer onto a different computer through FireWire or USB 2.0.

Video is then saved in the newer Mpeg-4 format. This format is the newest generation of video compression format to save a raw video file in the smallest size without effecting quality of video output.

The mini Digital camcorder also has the capability of being one of the best digital still cameras, and the majority of them have an extremely high picture quality capturing ability utilizing Carl-Zeiss lens with a capacity of up to 8 megapixels. Even better, some of the newest versions of mini digital camcorders have a web cam, an MP3 player, as well as a voice recorder integrated into it.

A mini digital camcorder less expensive than conventional digital camcorders, due to the fact that this kind of camera is has a market amongst teenagers, particularly those who prefer to travel and take snapshots or video of there trip.

They are available in many different colors and they fit in your palm. The captured videos also have the capability to be played directly on your television set to be shared with everyone.
